Paperwork & essentials

Get your CPF (Brazilian tax ID) — needed for almost everything, from a phone plan to buying property. Open a local bank account. Get a Brazilian SIM / phone plan (Vivo, Claro, or TIM). Sort your proof of address (comprovante de residência).

Weeks 1–2

Home & health

Set up utilities (electric, water) and internet. Choose health coverage — a private plan (~$150–$350/mo) and/or register with the public system (SUS). Secure a temporary rental while you explore neighborhoods. Find your local market and feira (street market) for cheap, fresh food.

Weeks 2–4

Getting around & connecting

Sort transport — bus card, rideshare, or buy/rent a car. Start learning Portuguese (an app plus a weekly lesson goes a long way). Line up an English-friendly doctor and dentist. Meet people — expat groups, coworking spaces, and neighborhood events.

Ongoing

Enjoy the island

Explore the beaches — Jurerê, Praia Mole, Campeche, Santinho, and dozens more. Visit Lagoa da Conceição and historic Santo Antônio de Lisboa. Try the local oysters and fresh seafood. Take a day to just relax. You made it. 🌴
